  1. We found out that birds have a lot of ways to stay warm when it is really cold. Their feathers help, and sometimes they grow extra feathers before the winter. Their feathers also have a special coating on them for insulation. Birds can fluff up their feathers to make air pockets. Sometimes birds huddle together to stay warm. Birds eat extra fatty foods to provide energy and make more heat.

    1. Wow! You learned so much through research! It is cool how the birds form an "oily" coat to keep them warm just like the needles of an evergreen tree! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Bella Grace and I used the follwing website for our research: http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/how-do-birds-survive-the-coldest-winters/.
We learned that birds have many ways of keeping warm during the freezing cold. Some birds grow extra feathers during the winter to help them stay warm. They also have ab oily coating that provides insulation and waterproofing. They may also increase their fat intake, shiver, or sunbathe for warmth. Bella Grace liked the saying that birds of a feather flock together. The birds may group together to keep warm as well.

  3. Isabella and I found that perhaps one of the most amazing adaptation birds have for dealing with the cold is their ability to lower their body temperatures, heart rate and genera body functions. Hypothermia conserves oxygen in the blood stream and is used primarily while sleeping. Hypothermia generally refers to lowering the body temperature a few degrees.
