Wonder #6

Are pennies lucky?

7 comments:

  1. Joshua thinks that pennies are lucky. Even though a penny can't buy you anything nowadays, pennies used to have more worth. We learned that there are a lot of superstitions about pennies, such as heads up bringing good luck and tails up bringing bad luck. Joshua likes to pick up any kind of money he finds lying on the ground; it doesn't matter if it's on head or tails! :)

  2. Many people believe it's best to find pennies heads up and that finding and picking up tails up penny is unlucky. This is based on Manichaeism, a system of religious doctrines based on a supposed primordial conflict between light and darkness or goodness and evil. Centuries ago people believed in polar opposites of good and evil, body and soul, dark and light. With coins, specifically the lucky penny, heads were seen as good while tails was seen as evil.http://www.ehow.com/facts_7378309_pennies-considered-lucky_.html

  3. Bella Grace and I learned that pennies are not really lucky but ancient people believed that any metal was a gift from the gods, and that included pennies which are made from copper.

  4. It was so neat to learn that pennies are made from metal (which is a material we learned about last week). Thank you for sharing!

  5. Nicholas thinks that pennies are lucky if you find them heads up. We read that if you find a penny tails up, you should turn it over for someone else to find. Other people think all pennies are lucky. We read about a common rhyme: "Find a penny, pick it up. All day long you'll have good luck!" We pick up any penny we see and add it to our piggy banks! :)
