We experimented to find out why some leaves change colors!

Today, we conducted an experiment to see why leaves change color and were excited to see how the colors stay hidden in the leaf all year!
We started our experiment by having everyone pick one green leaf from outside.

Next, we broke our experiment up into 4 steps. As we were completing the experiment, the students were recording each step in their wonder journal.

Step 1: break the leaves into small pieces and pour into jar

Step 2: add enough alcohol to the jar to cover the leaves and stir

Step 3: Cover the jar and place in hot water

Step 4: place the filter paper in the jar

Results: We were so excited about our results! Look at the different shades of green! Some of our friends even thought that we saw some yellow going up the filter paper.  We also now have some brown in our filter paper! This experiment really showed us how the yellows and browns were there all along but were covered up by the green.
