We have been focusing on addition this week in math.
We began by creating "Andy Addition" to help us learn all about addition.
We are exploring different techniques or strategies we can use to help us add. Monday and Tuesday, we learned how manipulatives can help you solve addition problems. We used teddy bears, unifix cubes, and counters.
Today, we learned that drawing pictures can also help make adding easier. We read the book, If I Were A Plus Sign and analyzed the story problems throughout the text.
Next, the students decided to create their own story problem. I modeled an example first, and then sent the students off to work independently. I was so impressed with the effort, hard work, and creativity the students put into their story problems.
Sage had 3 hats and Bella Grace gave me 3 more hats. 3 + 3= 6
Jaylen had 3 basketballs. Mom gave him 2 more. 3 + 2 = 5
Daniel had 1 dog. Sage gave me 1 more dog. 1 + 1 = 2
Austin had 5 basketballs. Sage gave me 2 more baseballs. 5 + 2 = 7
I had 1 dog and Katelynn gave me 2 more dogs. 1 + 2 = 3
(Can you tell I modeled my example using Sage?) :)
