Why is sand and salt put on roads when it snows-results

Today, we experimented with sand, salt, sugar, and flour to determine what happens to ice when the powders are poured on it. 

After researching on Wonderopolis.org and completing our experiment, we recorded our findings in our wonder journals. We learned that salt melts ice and sand creates traction!
