An Egg is Giving

I asked, "How do you think the baby ducks are able to survive inside of the egg?"

After discussing, we observed the page in our mentor text with the text, "An egg is giving."  We studied the diagram and discussed all of the different purposes the egg serves.  It is truly amazing to see how the egg has everything a baby needs to survive right inside!
We learned:
The shell is like the house.  It has tiny holes which allow air to go inside of the egg.
The yolk is the food.
The egg white is the pillow.
The baby is called an embryo.

"An egg is giving."

"Do you know that an egg has little holes so the baby duck can breathe?"

"I love baby ducks because their beak is so cute."

"The ducks get food."

"The egg gives the ducklings everything they need.  Like the shell is their home.  The yolk is its food. The egg white is its pillow."

"The egg is the baby's home.  It helps the babies."

"The shell keeps the babies safe from predators.  The shell is his house.  The yolk is its food so he can survive.  The egg white is its pillow."

"The shell keeps the egg safe."

"An egg has everything the ducks need to survive."
