Our Public Service Announcements

Today we recorded our very own Public Service Announcements.  We began by watching example videos and discussing the things we noticed.  Next, we used our opinion writing on community helpers to guide our commercials.  Students were asked to write about which community helper is most important to them.  Today, they spoke on camera to convince you to agree that their community helper is most important!  I hope you enjoy watching these videos!

Thanks for viewing our PSA's!

Our second Mystery Reader and a Contractor visited us today!

Today was a very exciting day here in room 201!  This morning, we had a Contractor visit our class.  His name was Mr. Ray.  Below are a few pictures and videos from our exciting morning.

Thank you so much for coming to speak to the kindergarten classes at OES!  We loved learning from you!  Thanks for building houses and for serving our schools!

After Mr. Ray left, we were excited to find out that we had a Mystery Reader here at school.  Sage's dad surprised our class and read the book, My Lucky Day.  Below are a few pictures of our time with Mr. Barber.

Thank you so much for coming to read to us Mr. Barber.  We had such a great time!

Fire Fighters visited us!

We had the privilege of having a fire fighter come visit the entire kindergarten today!  Last week, we made a chart that listed the things we already knew about fire fighters and anything we were wondering about.  This morning we used those I wonder statements, and turned them into questions.  This is our list:

Below are a few pictures as the students wrote down the question they wanted to ask the fire fighter.

After that, our class traveled down the hall to Mrs. Black's room to hear the fire fighter speak.  Below is a picture as he first began sharing with us.

After he was finished sharing with us, he gave us time to ask any questions we had for him.  Below are a few recordings of the wonderful questions we asked.  I wanted you to be able to hear how inquisitive your kindergartener's were because I was very impressed!

We had such a wonderful day and I am so glad that we can share it with you!

Dr. Patterson and Mrs. Skinner visited our class!

Good afternoon!  We are right in the middle of learning about different community helpers in our area!  Today, we learned about our administration.  We had such a fun time composing a list together of what we thought Dr. Patterson and Mrs. Skinner do throughout the day.  Below is the list that we came up with:

What does Dr. Patterson and Mrs. Skinner do all day?
·       Fix People (Katelynn N.)
·       Help people open their milk and drinks (Austin)
·       Give people spankings (Hayden)
·       A lot of paperwork (Jaylen)
·       When people fall they help them up (Emma)
·       Read books to the kids (Katelyn)
·       Make sure the kids do the right thing (Lake)
·       Watch TV in the office (Lexi)
·       Ride in the ambulance (Landon)
·       Get a pie in their face (Jayden)
·       Work on the computers (Joshua)
·       If we are late, we have to talk to them (Daniel)
·       When kids are lost, the principal’s find them (Nicholas)
·       Help kids (Cecilia)
·       If kids are real bad, they go to the principal’s office and they call their mom and dad and tell them what they did mean. (Jaylen and Landon)
·       Eats popsicles (Emma)
·       Give hugs (Lexi)
·       Listen to your heart (Landon)
·       If you have an accident they give you new pants (Katelynn)
·       They protect us (Katelyn)
Later in the day, we had a surprise visit from Dr. Patterson and Mrs. Skinner. They came to share with us the truth about what they really do each day at school. We were so lucky to have both principals come visit us together! Below is a picture as Dr. Patterson was talking with us!

Week 3!

Good afternoon!

Once again, we have had a wonderful week here at Oakland.

During ELA, we have enjoyed continuing to build our stamina to make us readers for longer periods of time.  On Thursday, we read for a total of EIGHT minutes which was WONDERFUL!  Today we almost made it to six minutes which is still really good for week 3 of kindergarten.  Please continue reading with your child every night!  We sent 100 BC folders and books home today so please make sure to read and log lines this weekend.

Our sight words next week are the, yes, and no.  Please review those at home each night.

During math, we have practiced with the numbers 1-5.  This week, we used counters to place on tens frames, wrote our numbers on dry erase boards, and played our first “I have, Who has” game as a class.  Below is a picture of the children holding up their boards for me to see the numbers 1, 3, 0, and 5.

If you would rather order scholastic books online, I have made an account that allows you to do that.  The access code to use on that site is MDVBW.  You can also reach this site by going to scholastic.com and typing in Oakland and our zip code.  My name will then show up for you to click on.  This is a great way to order books for your children and it benefits our class!

I will begin sending homework on Monday so please be on the lookout for that.  Most of the homework is not something that needs to be turned back in to me.  It is just an aid in working at home with your child!

Before recess, we enjoyed eating our ice cream from Bruster's.  The children loved their dessert and wanted to share a picture with you!

We ended our day with a surprise visit from our class pet.  He is a Koala Bear!  The office called to let us know that our class had a package.  The children were so excited!  Below are a few pictures as we opened the box!

Thank you all for being so wonderful and I am looking forward to a great school year!
