Candling- Day 15

Today, we candled our eggs again. We could not believe the changes that have taken place inside our eggs in just one week! Our eggs certainly are quiet right now, but we can tell that won't be the case for long.
"Today, we candled the eggs again.  The runner duck was inside."

"Today, we candled our eggs again and it was cool!"

"Today, we are candling them.  When we looked inside the first egg, it was big inside the egg.  The baby ducks have grown inside the egg.  The runner duck is big and black.  The pekin is not black."

"Today, we candled our eggs again and we saw inside the egg.  It was fun!  We have runner ducks inside of the egg!  We do not have Pekin ducks!  I love to do that!"

"The Pekin ducks are going bad for us.  The Runner ducks are going good for us.  But we don't no if we don't have Pekin ducks.  The runners egg is black because the baby is so big."

"We candled the egg again.  We know a runner is going to hatch!  We don't know if a Pekin egg will hatch."

"It was so cool but there were only baby runner ducks!"

"The ducks have grown."

"Today, we candled the eggs again.  One of the four pekin ducks did not hatch.  Th runner duck is big!  It was trying to get out!"

"I could see in the baby ducks because I can see the veins."

"I see the baby eggs.  The egg is quiet.  I love the baby eggs."

Who can build the tallest tower?

This week, we have been studying about height focusing on the terms taller and shorter. Today I gave my students a challenge: try to build the tallest tower with only the amount of shapes you can fit in your hands. The students worked in partners to complete this challenge!

Our tallest tower ended up being 11 inches! Our shortest was 4 inches. We figured out that our tallest tower was 7 inches taller than our shortest!

Going on an Insect Hunt

Today, we kicked off our unit on insects by going on an insect hunt! We grabbed our wonder journals and pencils to sketch the insects we observed.

Pekin Ducks Vs. Runner Ducks

Last week on homework, I asked the students to research and find one fact about each type of duck egg that we have in our incubator. Today, we shared our research with the class and then recorded our new learning in our journals.

We cannot wait to candle our eggs again Wednesday to truly determine how many eggs have ducklings inside!

We skyped with a 4K class from Dover Elementary

We had the privilege of skyping with a 4K class from Dover Elementary in Orangeburg, SC. These 4K experts have already hatched 6 ducklings in their classroom!

Prior to skyping, we came up with questions that we wanted to ask about their experience with hatching ducklings!
"What is the difference in Pekin and Runner ducks?"

"How many ducks do you have?"

"Do you have an incubator?"

"How big are they now?"

"Did you have to help the eggs hatch?"

I was so impressed with how detailed and specific their questions were!

After that it was time to skype! All of the kindergarten classes came to my room to participate in this experience! Can you imagine 100 kindergarteners in 1 classroom?!! It was so much fun!

I am also sharing two videos that were taken during our skype experience!

After skyping, we decided to write about our experience in our journals.
"A hundred kids came into our classroom to skype. It was cool!"

"We learned ducks have 3 eyelids."

"They have three eyelids."

"We were about to skype the 4K! I love to skype 4K! It was fun!"

"We skyped yesterday because we wanted to learn about baby ducks."

"We learned ducks have 3 eyelids."

"We skyped to learn from a 4K class about baby ducks.  Why do the baby ducks have a green head? Only boy mallards do.  Girl ducks have a normal head like the other girls."

"We skyped a 4K class. It was so cool! I learned that you have to pet them with two fingers."

"We skyped with a 4K class! It was so cool! One thing that I learned was that ducks have 3 eyelids. I loved skyping with a 4K class."

"Yesterday we skyped with a 4K class. I learned that mallard ducks have a green head."

"We were able to skype a 4K class. It was so fun! One thing I learned is that a duck has three eyelids!"

I want to give a big shout out to Mrs. Meek and her 4K friends for skyping with us, answering our questions, and sharing facts that they have learned!
