We have been learning all about how Christmas is celebrated in Mexico. We learned that they have a Posada Party each night beginning on December 16th and ending on Christmas Eve. During these parties, they normally have food, drinks, and play with a Piñata. This week, our class was able to pair with Mrs. Daniel's class and attend two Posada parties. Yesterday, we enjoyed chips and salsa and today we drank Mexican hot chocolate. We also had the opportunity to break the piñata at both parties. Please enjoy a few pictures from our time together.

Christmas in Australia
Today, we traveled to Australia! We were so excited to learn how they celebrate Christmas. We began our study by using google earth to locate Australia and to determine how far it is from America.
Jaylen noticed that we traveled the same direction as yesterday when we traveled to Japan. I love how observant and smart my children are!
We learned that in Australia, Santa trades his hot clothes in for some clothes that are much cooler because Christmas is celebrated during the summer! He also gives the reindeer a break and uses 6 white kangaroos to guide his sleigh. Their nicknames are the "six white boomers."
In Australia, it is very hot outside when they celebrate Christmas. We enjoyed sitting on beach towels as we learned and researched all about Christmas in Australia.

Jaylen was our Bucket Filler!
This week, Jaylen was our bucket filler! Today his mom, Lindsey, surprised us as our Mystery Reader! She read one of my favorite books: Llama Llama Holiday Drama.
Thank you so much for reading to our class!
Conquering the "Tricky Teens!"
Over the past few weeks, we have really began diving deep into the teen numbers. On Monday, one student noticed that all teen numbers start with a 1. Elaborating on that observation, I posed the question, "Why do all teen numbers start with a 1?" That first day, the most common answer was because one is the first number that we use to start counting. Even though that is a correct answer, I wanted my students to be able to prove their answer with something concrete. Throughout the week, we have continued using double tens frames and really emphasized how a teen number is "one full tens frame and some more."
Today, I posed the same question, "Why do all teen numbers start with a 1?" This was the answer that Nicholas shared!

The smile after he finished explaining shows the confidence that he has gained and how he is conquering those tricky teen numbers! I am so proud of all of my sweet students who are all gaining a strong understanding and foundation of teen numbers.
Please continue practicing these tricky teen numbers at home! One way you can practice these, is to have your child write the numeral and then show it on a tens frame. Below is a video of Sage, as she showed the number 13 on the Activ Board.
I love having the students break down the number and tell me that 13 is 1 tens frame and 3 more.
For more practice, you can also have your child draw a picture to represent a specific teen number.
Lastly, to practice teen numbers, we LOVE to sing this catchy song. I think it really does a great job breaking apart the numbers!
I hope you have fun practicing the teen numbers at home with your child!

Christmas in Germany
This week, we have been learning about how children in other countries celebrate Christmas. We learned that we have adapted many of our traditions from Germany! The christmas tree, singing carols, and the advent calendar all came from Germany. We have also learned that Tannenbaum means christmas tree in Germany.
The students were asked to put numbers in order 1-25 to create our very own Advent Calendar to use to count down to Christmas. It is so neat the children in Germany have many of the same traditions as us. Below is a picture of our Advent Calendar that we created:

We also had the opportunity to sing a Christmas carol to Dr. Patterson! Please enjoy the video of us singing below: (At the end, they decided to sing the song "O Christmas Tree" in German).
I hope you enjoyed hearing their sweet voices as much as I did!
We also completed our scrabook page describing everything we had learned from our visit in Germany. Below are 2 examples of their scrapbook pages.
