Why is the mother duck important?

As we were researching about our incubator, the kids kept referring to it as the mother duck. Knowing this, we decided to do further research on the "mother duck." We read the book, Jamima Puddle Duck and learned about how she worked hard to find a safe place to lay her eggs.  We also noticed how Jamima sat on her eggs to keep them warm.
